Jules Verne and ‘the country of Odin, Thor and Frey’  [1]
– References and literary allusions to Norwegian, or other Nordic scholars and explorers, in selected Verne novels.

Verne’s novels, a unique combination of fiction and didactical elements, contain many references to historical figures. Comments on Nordic culture and science was a part of Verne’s writing from early on. The purpose of this paper is to put some of these references into context. In 1861 (JM),Gods in Norse mythology appear, from Edda, by historian Snorre Sturlason – also the author of Heimskringla (Norwegian king’s saga), mentioned in VC (1864) shortly after. Several Norwegian sources, related to both science and myths, are given in ‘20000 Leagues’(1870). While discussing certain phenomena, Verne refers to old texts by Pontoppidan and Egede. In later novels, also contemporary scholars appear.

Decoding Verne’s Un Billet de loterie. Le numéro 9672 (1886)
– On the mysterious professor S and other real life persons, that became models for characters in Verne’s novel ‘The Lottery ticket’.

This novel, set in Norway, is often considered just a romantic story in exotic surroundings, based on Verne’s own travel experiences from a visit to Scandinavia, 25 years prior to the publishing. Looking particularly on the context in which the novel was created, the purpose of this paper is to modify this view. Studies of the material Verne expressed having read about the country, such as the French travel magazine Le Tour du Monde, indicates that sharing his own specific geographical knowledge, was not a priority. Most such elements in the novel, is information that anyone could find, reading the same sources. So, first hand travel experience from the country, was not necessary to describe the journey that takes place in the book. Findings in Verne’s diary from the journey in 1861, suggests that he became aware of political events in society, taking place exactly when he was visiting Scandinavia.  [fortsett lesing]

Jules Verne and Arctic exploration
– about the author’s view on the explorers F.Nansen (1861-1930)
and A.E.Nordenskiöld, (1832 – 1901) and their reception of his work.

Verne’s VE series, starts inside the blank spot on the map of Africa. Then he sets sail for the poles, the last places on the planet not visited by man. After collecting exotic, northern inspiration, visiting Norway in 1861, he writes the story about Captain Hatteras. Just like ‘Five weeks’, the novel is almost a textbook on exploration history, and his true-to-life descriptions inspired Arctic explorers. This presentation aims to have a two way -look at this topic. Both Verne’s writings about selected explorers and what these explorers themselves expressed about the author, will be commented.
